It will shock you to discover that I regularly visit a local gym. Above the water fountain, this poster recently appeared: Does anything so perfectly sum up the complexly tortured ideas that Americans have about Ambition? Even if the rhino could change himself through sheer effort, he’d never end up looking anything like a unicorn--because unicorns are imaginary.
This living panzer, equipped with armor and crescent-shaped daggers growing out of his head, is made to feel desperate and inadequate. Who invented the unicorn? How does this inventor profit from the rhino’s imagined vulnerability? Who manufactured the treadmill? Rhinos of the world, unite. Viva la revolución. I discovered a new detail while watching The Birdcage (1996) last night. A piece of office décor is needed to illustrate just how tediously conservative Sen. Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) is:
